An output device is defined as: any piece of computer hardware that communicates the results of data processing carried out by an information processing system (such as a computer), which converts the electronically generated information into human-readable form.

Four examples are:

  • Monitor - A monitor is the screen on which words, numbers, and graphics can be seem. The monitor is the most common output device.
  • Compact Disc - Some compact disks can be used to put information on. This is called burning information to a CD. NOTE: A CD can also be an input device.
  • Printer - A printer prints whatever is on the monitor onto paper. Printers can print words, numbers, or pictures.
  • Speaker - A speaker gives you sound output from your computer. Some speakers are built into the computer and some are separate.

Typical output devices used with standard computers include these:

  • video cards and their connected monitors,
  • sound devices and speakers.
  • printers

Note that the distinction isn't always clear. A pure printer (one that does not also include a scanner tool) is a pure output device, however, the port it connects to (USB, network, serial port, or even the old-fashioned parallel port) is typically a bidirectional port.

You can argue that memory and storage devices such as hard disks or flash memory cards are both input and output devices, so they would also fall into the category of output devices with the reservation that these devices are in fact bidirectional. The same applies to all forms of network or bus connectors (Ethernet, USB, Firewire, etc).

Other output devices are analog output devices with voltage or current, used with many applications in control. Typical output signals are 0..10V, 0..20mA, 4..20mA or simple binary signals in the 5..24V range.

What 4 component make up a computer system?

According to Intel: Input, Output, Processing and Storage. Input devices send data and instructions to the central processing unit. Processing executes computer instructions. Memory holds data and programs temporarily. Output devices make processed data available to the user. Storage devices store data and programs permanently.

How do CPU transfer data from input to output?

The process of transferring data from input to output in a CPU (Central Processing Unit) involves several steps and components working together. Here's a simplified explanation of how this process typically occurs: 1. Input Devices: Data is first entered into the computer system through various input devices such as keyboards, mice, touchscreens, scanners, or network connections. These input devices convert physical actions or signals into digital data that the computer can process. 2. Input/Output Controller (IO Controller): Input data from devices may pass through an Input/Output Controller, which manages the communication between the CPU and the input/output devices. The IO Controller may handle tasks such as buffering data, converting signals, and coordinating data transfer between devices and memory. 3. Data Bus: The CPU communicates with other components of the computer system, including input/output devices, through a data bus. The data bus is a set of wires or pathways that allow data to be transferred between different components of the computer system. 4. Memory: Data may be temporarily stored in the computer's memory (RAM) before being processed by the CPU. This allows the CPU to quickly access the data it needs for processing. 5. CPU Processing: The CPU retrieves data from memory and performs various processing tasks on it, such as calculations, data manipulation, or executing instructions. The CPU contains registers, caches, and arithmetic logic units (ALUs) that facilitate these processing tasks. 6. Output Devices: Once processing is complete, the CPU sends the resulting data to output devices such as monitors, printers, speakers, or network interfaces. Output devices convert digital data into physical forms that are usable or understandable to humans. 7. Output Controller: Similar to the input/output controller, an output controller may manage the communication between the CPU and output devices, handling tasks such as data buffering, signal conversion, and coordination of data transfer. 8. Data Bus (again): The processed data is transferred from the CPU to the output devices via the data bus, allowing for communication between these components. Throughout this process, the CPU coordinates the transfer of data between input, memory, processing, and output components, ensuring that data is processed accurately and efficiently. The specific mechanisms and protocols used for data transfer may vary depending on the computer architecture and the types of input/output devices involved.

What are the general parts of a computer?

A computer is made up of many components (parts). There are five main types of components: (1) microprocessors, (2) memory chips, (3) input devices, (4) storage devices, and (5) output devices. The microprocessor, also known as the central processing unit (CPU), does the actual computing. Memory chips hold data and processing instructions for use by the microprocessor. The computer receives data through input devices, such as a keyboard. Storage devices, which include disks and tapes, hold data and instructions for transfer to memory. Output devices, such as a television-like monitor, show results of the computer work. A computer is made up of many components (parts).
