The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional group that was originally made up of fifteen West African countries. As of today, the group is now made up of only thirteen countries. The original fifteen countries were Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. As of 2009, Niger and Cote d'Ivoire are no longer members.
Eight of the 15 member states in ECOWAS are French-speaking countries. The acronym stands for the Economic Community of West African States (Communauté Économique des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest). It takes in as French-speaking member states Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.
