Watson and Crick are probably the most obvious example here. They solved the riddle of how genetic information was stored inside our cells. They produced the first model of the 'double helix' structure that everyone now recognises as DNA. In their own words: "We've discovered the secret of life."

There are many molecular biologists that have contributed to understanding living organisms. These are few examples:

Linnus Pauling, "Father of chemical bond", & Robert Corey (30's - 40's) discovered 3D structure of many amino acids and guided them to elucidate the alpha cheratin structure. Their model helped Watson & Crick to find the DNA molecule structure.

James D. Watson & Francis Crick (1953), who discovered the structure of the DNA molecule. Along with Wilkins & Rosalind Franklin, work elucidated the 3D structure of such important molecule.

Friederich Sanger. Developed Protein (1953) and Nucleic acids (1975) sequencing techniques. These powerful methods speed up the efforts to "read" gene and amino acid sequences in nucleic acid and protein, respectively.

Jaques Monod, Francois Jacob & Andre Lwoff (1959) that discovered the "lac operon" which encodes protein necessary for the transport and breakdown of the sugar lactose.

Cesar Milstein & Georges Köhler (late 70's) developed the technique for immortalizing clones to produce monoclonal antibodies, such a powerful technique that until these days is being performed.

Elizabeth Blackburn (1989). Discoverd telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes the telomere, the structure that protects the chromosome.

These few examples give us a modest idea what molecular biologists have done and still are giving to mankind in order to understand ourselves from the science view. By the way, all this scientist won the Nobel Price.
