Depends upon what happens after- Does it start up again? Does it try to start and then die? (won't turn over) Does it actually start then die? What were you doing when it died..freeway driving...slowing down...turning? What kind make, model and year is it? What size motor? Automatic or Manual? What were weather conditions? Winter or summer, and what was temp. like? Also, on the car- did your lights and other electrical componants kill at the same time the engine died, or did they still work to a degree?
Its difficult to figure out what is going on without a lot more detail. But if you can answer even the questions above-that would help narrow it down.
At first blush, your battery won't generally die while driving unless your alternator died-and that is unusual while driving as well. But it it is electrical it could be an alternator, a connector to the alternator or even a short in the system somewhere else.
Another could be a fuel pump..that will kill when driving no matter what the conditions- but very cold winter driving will hasten a fuel pumps death-especially if you don't keep your tank full all the time-run it near empty and then dump gas it-that alone will destroy the fuel pump.
Could be as simple as bad gas- did you fuel up recently before this occured? That will cause your car to die anytime too- water in the gas will freeze up your whole fuel system under the right circumstances- only cure for that, unless you know how to drain the fuel lines, tank and everything else your self, and have the set up for it- is to take it in and have it done-a pricey venture.
Depending upon your vehicles make and age- you could have a carburetor (sp?) if so, timing and other things can go wrong there- in some carbs. there is a valve [petcck] on top of the carb- to replace that is about 3 bucks and a screwdriver
anyway- if you could answer some details- ill be able to help you out a bit better.
could be the fuel pump
Did it turn over after it stopped running??? Could be too many differant things to list. But i would start by checking for loose or rusted wires going from battery to alternator and starter. Also make sure the ground wire (usually attached to the block) is tight.
sounds like a fuel pump but it could be anything check that first
The battery was week and stopped recharging. Check the date of the battery! The batt feeds some electricals directly...Flat batt could stop engine from running.
Check charging system with a voltmeter: Fully charged 12.8 without engine running 13.8-14.2 with engine running
One possiblity could be that the charging system has failed and you were running off battery power only, eventually the battery goes dead and so does the car.
Was the volt gauge working? If it showed no response when driving then the charge/ign fuse could be blown and you were running off battery power till it ran down.
Your car battery could be running low so what you could do is get jumpleeds and get an other and jumpwire it
It might
If the alternator is installed incorrectly, yes, it can drain the battery.
There is a good chance that your alternator has stopped working. It could also be just a loose wire from the alternator to the battery that is not letting the battery charge. Also it could be a bad battery. When a cell in a battery dies it will hold a charge for a short period of time but then rapidly die. Get the battery checked first. they the wires, then the alternator.
Yes.
