The official list from the Walt Disney Company currently consists of eleven princesses:

  • Snow White, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs(1937)
  • Cinderella, from Cinderella (1950)
  • Aurora, from Sleeping Beauty (1959)
  • Ariel, from The Little Mermaid (1989)
  • Belle, from Beauty and the Beast (1991)
  • Jasmine, from Aladdin (1992)
  • Pocahontas, from Pocahontas (1995)
  • Mulan, from Mulan (1998)
  • Tiana, from The Princess and The Frog (2009)
  • Rapunzel, from Tangled (2010)
  • Merida, from Brave (2012)

Six are royal by birth (Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine, Rapunzel, and Merida), and three are royal by marriage (Cinderella, Belle, and Tiana). Inclusion of Pocahontas and Mulan on the Princesses list is contested by some fans; although Pocahontas is the daughter of a Native American chief, there is some disagreement in the ways that the structure of Native American tribes differs from traditional European royalty, and Mulan is neither royal nor marries royalty (her husband, Li Shang, is a captain and then general in the Chinese Army).

Now, while there are only eleven official princesses, there are several unofficial princesses. They are as follows:

  • Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck
  • Faline, from Bambi (1942)
  • Alice, from Alice in Wonderland (1951)
  • Wendy and Tinker Bell, from Peter Pan(1953)
  • Maid Marian, from Robin Hood (1973)
  • Eilonwy, from The Black Cauldron (1985)
  • Calla, from the Adventures of the Gummi Bearstelevision series (1985-1991)
  • Sally, from The Nightmare Before Christmas(1993)
  • Nala, from The Lion King (1994)
  • Esmeralda, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame(1996)
  • Megara, from Hercules (1997)
  • Atta and Dot, from A Bug's Life(1998)
  • Kiara, from The Lion King II: Simba's Pride(1998)
  • Jane, from Tarzan (1999)
  • Jessie, from Toy Story 2 (1999)
  • Melody, from The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000)
  • Kida, from Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
  • Kairi, from the Kingdom Hearts video games (2002-Present)
  • Madellaine, from The Hunchback of Notre Dame II(2002)
  • Ting-Ting, Su, and Mei, from Mulan II (2005)
  • Giselle, from Enchanted (2007)
  • Kilala, from the Kilala Princess manga (2005-2008)
  • Vanellope, from Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
  • Sofia, from Sofia the First (2012-Present)
  • Princess Anna and Elsa the Snow Queen, from Frozen (2013)
  • Elena, from Elena of Avalor (2016-Present)

Some of these, such as Giselle, Maid Marian, Nala, and Megara have also been included in Disney Princess merchandise but are not considered to be Disney Princesses, while others, such as Eilonwy and Kida, have never been considered princesses.

Tinker Bell and Esmeralda were once part of the line, but eventually dropped. Jane was planned to be part of it, but these plans were never realized. Anna and Elsa were also planned to be part of the line, but the unexpected popularity of Frozenmade it too redundant to include them in another major franchise.

Alice is one of the seven "Princesses of Heart" in the Kingdom Hearts video game series (alongside Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, Jasmine, and Kairi).

The upcoming film Moana, scheduled for release on November 23, 2016, is announced to add its titular character to the Disney Princess line as well.

The following are all eleven official Disney Princesses and a brief explanation in chronological order.

Each has been certified an "Official Disney Princess" by Disney; some are born into the title (Aurora, Merida), some marry the son of a King (Cinderella), some marry a Reigning Prince (Belle) and some correspond to an equivalent title (i.e. Chieftain's Daughter or Sultan's Daughter), though some, such as Mulan, do not hold the actual title of Princess.

Each Official Disney Princess must: A) have a primary role in a Disney animated feature film, B) be human or closely human-like (i.e. Ariel), and C) not appear primarily in a sequel. The actual title of Princess (or equivalent) is not necessary, but certainly helps.
