These are the short term effects (that have been recorded since the policy began until 2010)

The one child policy was an effective policy. China accomplished what they set out to do - reduce the rate of population growth. The law has prevented up to 400 million deaths in its first two and a half decades. Apart from this, the standard for education has improved. As well as that tap water coverage has increased from 84-94%, coverage of natural gas has increased from 18-73%, and medical coverage has been extended to include birth insurance,m worker's compensation for mothers following the policy. Other factors that have improved are the life expectancy (from 35 in 1949 to 70 in 1996), and infant mortality (from 200/1000 to 33/1000). All of these positive aspects ensure that those following the one child policy will get added benefits and have a better life for their child. China has effectively "raised the standards of living by keeping the growth rates down"1.

However, there are many negatives to the policy as well, though maybe not as obvious as the positives. Studies show that China's one child policy has shown a large increase in usage of social networking sites. It seems that they are replacing relationships with technology. It also shows their loneliness. Apart from this because parents also tend to pamper their kids a lot, since they only have one. This has caused children to become so-called "little emperors". They are very spoilt and can be more egoistic, and less cooperative with other children. Because of the small size of the families, family ties are also affected. Also, parents care so much about their children's education that they go into debt to send them to the best schools - even kindergartens.

I can only think that it would result in the reduction of the population rise, especially in the countryside, which was the policy's intended goal.

On the other hand it has the effect, that a lot of newborn baby girls are killed right after being born, because the family wants a male heir!

The fact that parents can only have one child leads many parents to abort or abandon girl children. Boys are more desirable because they can carry on the family name.

China's one child policy is unfair as you're aloud to have another child if it's a girl but not if it's a boy
