still extant are several species of flightless Kiwi (Apteryx = no wings).

The Kakapo is a flightless ground-dwelling nocturnal parrot, but it can climb trees using its beak.

There used to be several species of Moa, very large flightless birds of a similar family to Rhea, Ostrich, and Emu. The Moa are now all extinct.

Several native birds don't like to fly, Notornis, Weka, Pukeko; but all will fly if made to do so.
