Plastics are both a boon and a bane. They are a boon because they have allowed numerous advances in technology and medicine. They are a bane because they are not recycled that often, and end up taking up space in landfills and becoming pollutants.

Plastics fall into many types - everything from almost indestructible teflons to biodegradable corn starch based material. They are ubiquitous in our society, consume a lot of our resources in their manufacture and present significant waste handling problems. Whether plastic is a menace or not depends how we use it an how we dispose of it minimizing the impacts on the environment.

Plastics are made from hydrocarbons. Their manufacture takes a slice of the overall hydrocarbon supply available to the world. Ongoing energy and process economic changes ensure that these products are made more efficiently.

Fortunately the "indestructible" nature of plastics make them easiiy recyclable if they can be segregated into discrete types after consumer use. Even mixed plastics can be physically compressed and bonded into replacment "lumber" for construction and other uses. Ultimately even badly degraded or contaminated plastics can be used for fuel.

Present disposal methods (as opposed to recycling) leave much to be desired. Landfilling of plastics into properly designed disposal sites takes up valuable room in the site for a non-toxic, non-leachable, non-decomposable material. Disposal as litter on land or in the water can cause unsightly accumulations that interfere with plant and animal life.

As a coin has two sides in the same way science has its merit as well as demerits.

Science is a boon as we got so many electrical appliances which has made our work very easy in many fields.

It is also a curse as this technology can sometimes be used in a wrong way like manufacture of varoius destructive bomb.

It depends on us in what way we use this beautiful gift .

According to me plastic is boon because

1. Plastic is light-weight, durable, low-cost, and has a wide variety of application ranging from a pen, which you use to write on the paper, to the waste paper basket, into which you throw the paper. Plastic undoubtedly has been the one of the greatest achievements by man. (Well, not comparable to the wheel though!) Anyhow, plastic has proved to be a boon in various ways. When you enter a hospital, you can never fail to notice plastic vials, bottles, syringes, tubes, and many more articles made of plastic; those which are used to save many lives everyday all around the globe. As I did mention above, plastic has replaced metals and glass as the primary material used in the manufacture of pens. To use metals to manufacture pens would be costly and using glass, though cheap, it is not a durable material. Plastic is used in the manufacture of thousands of home use articles such as boxes, cases, bottles, containers, tumblers, chairs, tables, and many more. It also, in some way or the other forms a part of almost all electrical equipment, be it the sheathing of a wire or a plug casing, or even the keys of your cell phone. Plastic finds itself in automobile, and aircraft parts; in kids toys, and everyday articles like a brush or a comb.

Don't reduce using plastic, but use it in a proper way.
