The #1 cylinder is ALWAYS right front when looking over the radiator. Driver's side front. Can't help you with the distributor. Sorry
The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the FRONT and center of the engine
# 1 position on the distributor cap faces AWAY from the engine The spark plug firing order is ( 1 - 5 - 3 - 6 - 2 - 4 ) The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE
The number one plug is the one on the drivers side front of the engine. Therefore the plug wire connected to that plug is number 1 and where it connects to the distributor is the number 1 position on the distributor. If you have removed all the plug wires then you will have to remove the spark plugs, turn the engine over until the number 1 cylinder is at top dead center (TDC) on the compressions stroke. Once it is at TDC then the rotor inside the distributor will be pointing to the number 1 position.
no1 on the distributor always points towards the no one cylinder
To remove the distributor on your Chevy Celebrity 2.5L 4 cylinder engine: 1, Set the timing to the number one cylinder in the firing position. 2. Remove the distributor cap and put out of the way. If you take out any of the spark plug wires make note of where to put them back. 3. Loosen and remove the retainer clamp and its bolt. 4. Pull the distributor out of the block. To reinstall the distributor reverse the instructions. You will need to re-time the engine when you put the distributor back in.
Viewed from the top looking down on the engine with the center of the cap being 12 o'clock coincident with the centerline of the engine, number 1 is at the 11 o'clock position.
The number 1 position on the distributor cap of a Ford 5.0 liter / 302 is : It faces to the REAR and towards the number 7 engine cylinder ( in every picture I have seen in repair manuals ) The engine cylinder locations are numbered : firewall 4 - 8 3 - 7 2 - 6 1 - 5 front of vehicle
The location of number 1 cylinder is front left.

Easiest way to find it is to set #1 piston at TDC and remove the distributor cap to see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing to #1 cylinder position in relation to the distributor cap.
