Insane economic BOOM in the early days that's still alive today in many ways. The pipeline and all of it's supporting services employ many people in high paying jobs. It offers some tourism benefits....most people like to see it if there in the area, but it's not something they go far out of their way to see. The biggest, most positive effect of the pipeline is the PFD, or Permanent Fund Dividend. In the early boom years of the pipeline in the 1970's Alaskas foreward thinking Governor, Jay Hammond had some of the money from the oil boom invested in a general fund owned by the citizens of Alaska to benefit the citizens well into the future. Each year the state of Alaska takes the revenue-earnings of the fund and pays out a dividend to each Alaskan resident that is 6 months of age or older. The original "core" deposit is never touched or spent. These checks that are sent out are just the profit that has been earned each year. They split the profit by the number of residents eligible to determine how much each person receives. Because the earnings vary from year to year, so do the checks residents receive. They have ranged from maybe a thousand or so to as high as around four thousand dollars for each person. Each year when the checks are mailed out the state economy goes crazy and booms again. Car dealers will often offer to double the value of your check if you put it towards the purchase of a car. Most other businesses offer incentives as well, just about every business in Alaska is in a mad rush to get as much of that money as possible and to sell as much as possible. It has even been shown that the Birth Rate in Alaska has gone up since the checks began years ago. In the years when the payment is largest , the birth rate is highest, vice versa. More states should learn from Alaska and manage their Natural Resources in such a way as to benefit their citizens and businesses and boost their economy.
