Cpl Shampaner was commanding what Marine commanders refer to as a Hunter/ Killer Team. His team was ambushed by as many as 6 enemy combatants. He and his shooter repelled three separate attacks and neutralized as many as 4 enemy soldiers from a range of 25 meters. They neutralized these soldiers with rifle fire and Shampanier exposed himself to enemy machine gun fire to throw hand grenades. Shampaner later acknowledged that his shooter should have been recognized as well for his extreme heroics.
