Cortez, Pizarro, and other Spanish explorers in Central America were introduced to cacahuatl, a drink made from roasted cocoa beans blended with red pepper, vanilla, and water, by the natives. However, this drink did not suit their European tastes, so they experimented with different additives such as sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. No one knows exactly who first tried mixing the cocoa powder with milk and sugar to create what we now call milk chocolate.
