Many Americans and American politicians simply believed that it was wrong to annex other lands. They pointed to the reasons we declared our independence from Great Britain. People should be free to govern themselves. Some believed Imperialism was the wrong course for the US to take. Some of the anti-imperialists appealed to racist feelings. Many were ill at ease because of the nation's black populationand did not think it wise to add more "nonwhite" people under the flag. Many felt the cost would be too high. We would have to fight a rebellion in the Islands led by many who favored independence for the Philippines; we would have to station the military there and governmental officials and pay for all of it. Many believed the cost of a long term investment in the Islands was not worth it.

In the Philippines, the US faced armed resistance from fighters who felt betrayed by US annexation, when they thought they were allied with US forces in their efforts to expel Spain and establish a Philippine Republic. This lasted until about 1906.
