hey buddy I'm 20 i had the option between a disc replacement or a fusion. i went with a fusion because the artificial disc wears out after about 10-15 years and after that they have to fuse you, that is what my doctor had told me. but i feel your pain. with me having a fusion i thought i was not going to be able to do alot of the things that i like doing like ski, tube, ect... but my doctor said about after 3-5 months ill be able to do whatever i want. i mean there's risks to every surgery whether its minor or a major surgery. they will go through your stomach with the disc replacement. i do not know how big the scars will be. but my scars for having a fusion they are about 1 1/2 long and i have 2 of them. but the good thing is that were both young and we will heal ALOT faster. but the most major risk is paralysis (paralyzed) but don't worry about that though I'm in the marines and have seen some stuff and been in some stuff and wasn't as scared, my fusion surgery scared me the most out of anything. you'll be fine with technology now days and the doctor I'm sure your seeing has been doing this for a good while now. every thing will go smooth don't worry and good luck to you! you will feel so much better after the surgery it will be a whole different kind of hurt than before, you will just be hurting because of the surgery not because of the problem before you will feel sooo much better!!!!!! GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!!!!

Artificial disk replacement is a surgery used to relieve back pain. Disk replacement surgery replaces an intervertebral disk with a mechanical device.
What about it
The risks may include paralyzing or back pain
There are risks with any kind of surgery that is performed. All of the risks will be presented to you that are specific to your type of back surgery. Endoscopic surgery is generally less risky than traditional surgery. If anesthesia is being used that can cause complications in and of itself.

Some of the risk associated with disc replacement surgery is that you will continue to suffer back pain even after the surgery or you could reinjur yourself and put your back in even more harm.
Infection of the area and nerve damage can be common, as this is no minor procedure. Post-surgery complications in the lower back are also not rare.
There are risks involved with any surgery, however, back surgerys are especially risky because of possible spinal cord injury. You need to weigh the risks and benefits with your doctor before proceeding.

no artificial discs! my mom had one in her back and it slipped and she had to rush for an emergency surgery and then had fusion, which is fine.
People have tried everything you can think of to avoid surgery! Surgery should always be your last option as it comes with the most serious risks of all other treatments for the back. Things to try to avoid surgery will be almost entirely dependent on what the problem is...mechanical back pain? scoliosis? herniation? anterolisthesis? stenosis? fracture? cancer?
Endoscopic back surgery can improve back problems quickly and with less pain than traditional back surgeries. This surgery is minimally invasive so there is less risk of infection and less healing time. As with any surgery there are risks. One con of endoscopic back surgery is that only one level of the back can be operated on at a time so someone with issues at multiple spine or muscular levels may need multiple surgeries.
