Serpentine belt rides off tensioner pulley. this pully looks out of line where do i adjust it?

It more than likely needs new bearings. That is why it is out of line, unless the vehicle has been in an accident. Remove the belt, and remove the tensioner idler pulley and repair it.

You don't. The serpentine belt tension is automatically maintained by the tensioner pulley, which is an idler pulley located on the passenger side of the system and looks like it doesn't drive anything. If the belt tension is incorrect, the tensioner pulley must be replaced. If the question meant 'how to release tension from the belt' (for removal, etc.), this is done by applying the correct size socket wrench to the tensioner pulley's center nut and rocking the pulley away from the belt.

Facing the engine the tensioner will be on left side of engine. There is an idler pulley that looks like the tensioner. The idler will have a smooth surface but the tensioner will have grooves on the pulley & should below the idler. If the tensioner is making noise etc it is prob just the tensioner pulley (grooved one) & you can get just the pulley. Big savings.

Most likely you need to look for a grooved pulley that looks like it may not be related to any parts of the engine,(i.e. the water pump pulley, a/c pulley) this is the tensioner pulley. The tensioner pulley on my '97 GMC 5.7L is located just beneath the alternator. Inorder to relieve the pressure from the "tension arm" find a square opening molded into the pulley arm, and insert a breaker bar to use as a lever for relieving the tension. Some vehicles may need a ratchet and socket in order to move the tensioner arm. With a little effort to relieve the pressure, you can now remove the serpentine belt. Most vehicles will have a diagram in the engine compartment showing the specific route for the belt to go on the pulleys. I've found that the easiest way to install the new belt, is put the belt around all of the pulleys first then lastly on the tensioner pulley.

serpentine belt is located to the to the left side of the engine when standing in front of the car. locate the tensioner (it looks like a pulley with a short metal arm attachiing it to the engine. in the center of that pulley you take and wrench that fits that nut(i think a 15mm)then pull the wrench towards you taking tension off the belt, making sure you reroute the belt in the right way, do the same with the tensioner to allow slack to put the new belt on.

There should be one on a panel under the hood of your car. Typically it sits above your radiator or in that area. If not then look for the tensioner pulley. I could not tell you for sure if it has a tensioner pulley or a manual tensioner but look at each one of your pulleys(the wheels that are mounted to your alternator, engine, power steering pump, etc.) and try to see if one of them looks like it is mounted to an arm that could hinge. If so take a rench and see if the pulley moves up or down, or side-to-side when you apply pressure to the wrench. If it does, that is your tensioner. Simply get your belt started on all of the other pulleys and then apply pressure to the tensioner pulley until it is positioned in such away that allows you to slide the serpentine belt onto it. But just in case, before doing all of this, check to see if something caused your belt to break. Try to spin each pulley by hand and see if any are wobbly or stuck. Hope this helps. Kyle

If there is no hole, then use a wrench on the bolt head of the pulley itself as your lever. As you hold the tensioner out of the way, un-loop the old belt. Pay attention to the routing, so you can reinstall the new one correctly. Then, you route the new one in and again use your lever to move the tensioner so you can get the belt over the last pulley. I usually put it over the alternator last. Use a light to make sure the belt is fully on all grooves of every single pulley before you start the car.
