At this point gambling is already de-facto legal in many areas,

including horse racing, Dog Racing, bingo, state lotteries, tribal casinos, and just about anything in Las Vegas.

The reason for the laws against unsanctioned forms is the element of criminal activity that inevitably occurs. In sports betting, from boxing to Basketball, gambling-related bribery or intimidation can ruin legitimate competition. Many jurisdictions are "soft" on small gambling operations as it is, and in some areas only operations that are flagrantly illegal are prosecuted.

There can't be an objective answer to this question. Mine would be yes. People should be able to do whatever they want, and natural selection will do its thing from that point on. The main reason gambling is controlled is not to protect people, but to score tax revenue.

In fact, gambling is legal in many places, thus it's not either a criminal or dangerous activity provided it is done responsibly, and in accordance with the law. In this respect, the first thing to do is to regulate gambling, both land-based and online. Once the legislative base is created and the regulation covers every aspect of gambling industry, it's already half way to legalizing it, since being legal means to follow the rule of law.

Yes, our right to lose our money is being taken away from us. Our government wants you to spend your money in stores, where taxes are collected. They want all the money to themselves. It comes from the age-old saying "If you can't tax it, outlaw it." So, in short, the government will never legalize internet gambling because there is no simple way to tax it.

Society Benefits from Legalized Gambling.

Legalized gambling is an industry regulated by agencies of state, and federal government. These governmental agencies establish regulations that focus on the policy functions of gambling entities. The agencies ensure the integrity of the games offered to the public, and assume the responsibility to protect the public against unfair or dishonest gamming practices by those gambling entities. The gambling industry is growing every year; the "National Gambling Impact Study Commission" states, "in the year 1998, people in the United States lost fifty billion dollars in legal wagering." Furthermore, the commission estimates that the figure will increase in coming years with no end insight." The rapid growth of the gambling industry has imparted economic benefits and social costs. Does the economic benefits justify the social costs of the ever growing industry of gambling? The economic benefits are far greater than the social costs, and the gambling industry will enhance society as a whole, and with future planning (education of social costs incurred from gambling) eliminate or minimize the social costs.

Gambling has both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages - State lotteries are used to fund education or other things such as highways. The winners get the jackpot, and the losers pay for both the winners and the state's education. So either way, you are a winner in that sense. Licensed, legal gambling can be fun and you might win a few extra dollars if you are lucky.

Disadvantages - Lotteries often exploit the poor. Poor people buy tickets hoping to win, and for the most part, they never do, and thus spend money they need for other things on tickets. There are also people who are addicted to gambling. Their solution to their debts is to gamble even harder. They reason that they will earn it all back some day and much more. They feel they just have to come up with a reliable system, pray to the right deities, wish on the correct stars, or whatever. It doesn't work that way, but they keep trying.

There is also the criminal element. At the simple level, there are people who commit petty crimes to buy lottery tickets. Plus there are the illegal gambling events. This could mean betting on things that are illegal on their face such as animal fights or forcing children and unwilling participants to fight. Or it could be regular things people bet on like horse-racing, sporting events, or high stake card tournaments, just in an illegal context. When there are illegal events, there are often other crimes nearby such as prostitution and drugs. Also, gangs or organized crime may be involved. The prostitution that is involved here is not necessarily by choice, but sex slavery and human trafficking. At its worst, the gangs, cartels, or crime families are allowed to run unchecked because the law enforcement is afraid of them, and too many high-ranking officials are involved in the criminal activities. If police officers are not paid well enough, or they have problems such as debts, substance abuse, gambling, or child support obligations, they may be tempted to take bribes to look the other way when illegal gambling and other things are happening.

The Conclusion - Organized state lotteries and duly licensed gambling at sporting events, animal races and casinos can be fun and lucrative to the states and local government. However, there must be safeguards against exploiting those who cannot afford to gamble, safeguards against addiction, and safeguards against crime and corruption. Well-managed, government-run gambling can be healthy and good, so long as the officials involved are not subject to bribery or other criminal activity.

Well, a decision upon this is an opinion. Whether or not gambling should be illegal can not be proven one way or another. From what I've heard, it sounds really bad.
