The purpose of the fireplace damper is to keep the outside elements, outside. The damper is opened only when there is a fire in the fireplace.

∙ 13y agoYes, close the damper once all of the fire has died out. Leaving the damper open will cause warm air to be sucked up the flue, drawing in more cold air.
