Simple contusions, bruises and the like cause: * Pain, local at the wound site, and sometimes a headache. * Symptoms of whiplash, as the back, notably the cervical spine, usually takes a hit. * A bump or bruise is to be expected. Symptoms of a concussion include: * Some, none or all of the above plus.... * Unconsicousness, either at the time of the injury, later, or both. * Nausea * Vomiting * Blurred vision * Unequal dialtion of pupils * Short term memory impairment. * Increased confusions ("where am I?") * Perserveration (repeating the same question over and over). * Dizziness or vertigo * Tinnitus or ringing in the ears Note that any combination of these signs indicates the need for a professional assessment. Symptoms of a Skull Fracture include: * Some, none or All of the above plus... * Visible breakage of the skull, or visibility of structures beneath the skull * Bleeding or leaking of a clear liquid from the ears, eyes, nose, or at the injury location. * Depressions in the skull at or near point of impact, or opposite the point of impact (contre coup injuries) Any suspicion of skull fracture needs to be transported to the ER at once.
