The Scientific Method is used to conduct an experiment. The steps to this are ask a question, do research, construct a hypothesis, test hypothesis by doing an experiment, analyze data and draw conclusion and communicate the results.

It depends on the experiment, but a general application of the scientific method is good.

Make an observation. e.g., Children who just consumed massive amounts of sugar get hyper.

Make the observation a question. "What happens if I give children a lot of sugar?"

Make an if/then statement. This will become your hypothesis. "If children consume lots of sugar, then they will become hyper.

For scientific rigor, declare an independent and dependent variable. In this case, the sugar is the independent variable, hyperactivity is the dependent variable. (They typically follow the If/Then form. If [independent variable], then [dependent variable].)

Devise your experimental group(s), the children with sugar, and a control group(s), children who do not get the sugar.

Run the experiment. You may have to go before some ethical boards, depending on the experiment. In this case with children and sugar, you will have to get approval and have the parents of the children sign a permission slip.

Record the results from the experiment. Compare the hyperactivity of children with sugar with the children without sugar. If there is a significant difference, then your hypothesis is true. (To find if your difference is significant, you use chi-square. Your measured versus expected or your sugar-children versus your control. Typically if your chi-square is p < 0.05, then your hypothesis is true.)

This is usually known as the procedure.

Sometimes the term method is also used.
