The French Revolution called for liberty, equality and fraternity, and they sought the rights that were given to free and independent people. They sought what the Enlightenment philosopher's defined as man's natural or God given rights. They also sought sovereignty of the people, with the government committed to protecting their rights rather than taking them away. They wanted equal rights to mean everyone would be treated the same, and equal rights would mean equality for all, not just select classes.
