Why did the US get militarily invovled with Vietnam?

From the perspective of the early sixties, the United States was at a point of high tension in our relations with the Soviet Union and Red China. One of the consequences of this tension was a tremendous respect (fear?) of anything communist. When Vietnamese communist forces defeated French forces, the U.S. government was concerned that their Allie, South Vietnam, would fall to communism. As a member of the South East Asia Treaty Organization, the U.S. had promised to protect South Vietnam. U.S. forces were sent to South Vietnam to train their army. When our troops began to face assaults from the North Vietnamese communist troops, more U.S. military assets were added to protect the trainers. This cycle continued to escalate until 1965, when entire divisions began arriving in South Vietnam to push communist forces back into the north. Because of the concern over communist encroachment on other countries throughout the world, U.S. presidents were quick to use their military to stop that communist growth wherever they found it.

Why did the Vietnamese guerrillas fight the French in Indochina?

France was the only country after WW2 that refused to grant independence to its Asian colonies. Ho Chi Minh had tried to ask the U.S. to help negotiate with the French, but the U.S. refused because he had had communist contacts during WW2. That left no option but a war of independence against France, which as the only military support he could get was from his previous communist contacts Vietnam eventually became a communist nation.

What did the Escalation of the war in Vietnam began with?

The Vietnam War really began with the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which was the attack on the USS Maddox by Communist North Vietnamese naval forces. This was the impetus for the justification of a war, as well as the escalation in terms of the numerical increase of American forces in South Vietnam. The first major battle between US and NVA forces was Operation Starlite in late August 1965.

How did the US involvement end in Vietnam?

By 1970 it was plainly clear that the Unites States people had turned against any further support for the war in Vietnam; and South Vietnamese government was too corrupt an inefficient for them to be able to wage the war for much longer. Funding to support the corrupt South Vietnamese regime was cut back significantly and starting in 1971 the United States military began withdrawing their forces from Vietnam. In 1973, the Vietnamese were left to fight it out for themselves; and in 1975 South Vietnam was overrun and surrendered.

When did the Vietnam War start?

The Vietnam War began in 1955 and ended in 1975. The beginning is generally regarded as the declaration by Ngo Diem of the Republic of Vietnam in late October, 1955.The US role began before the French defeat in 1954 that led to the "temporary" partition of French Indochina. Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy sent military "advisers" and allowed the CIA to support South Vietnam against the communist North (supported by the USSR).Direct use of US air and ground forces began in 1965, after the Gulf of Tonkin incident during the term of President Lyndon Johnson. After three years of war produced no better military situation, Richard Nixon was elected and began to promote a negotiated withdrawal ("peace with honor") that amounted to abandonment of the South Vietnamese and their conquest by the North.

Analyze the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam and describe their domestic and international effects?

1. The Korean War began like WWII, with a North Korean mechanized (tank/infantry) attack into South Korea and it ended like WWI, stalemated and signed off with an "Armistice." 2. The Vietnam War began by North Vietnamese Army infiltration into South Vietnam, and ended with a victorious NVA conventional tank/infantry attack into South Vietnam. Translation: 1. Communist forces lost the Korean War (they did NOT attain their objective). 2. Communist forces won the Vietnam War (they DID attain their objective).

When did north and south Vietnam join together?

The official establishment of the single republic of Vietnam occurred on July 2, 1976. The Vietnamese name of the unified republic is "Cong hòa xã hoi chu nghĩa Viet Nam". The forces of North Vietnam captured Saigon, the capital of the South, on April 30, 1975, a day after the evacuation of the US Embassy on April 29. This marked the end of the Vietnam War, which began with the partition of the former French colony in 1956. The military conquest of South Vietnam became inevitable with the withdrawal of US combat forces under the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, completed on March 29, 1973.
