The theme of the story is the importance of getting out of your comfort zone and e…mbracing a life of danger. Lots of people criticized it for being reckless. The theme or purpose is to convey the importance, security and sanctity of the home, while warning of the perrils of ambition and of the desire for fame/immortality. When you look at the ambitious guest, he has traveled far and wide, but has done nothing, stayed in no place long enough to do anything, established no roots, ingratiated himself to no one, no community, no family, nothing. When the rockslide occurs, and both he and the family he was staying with perish, the family is at least remembered throughout the land in which the family resided, the ambitious guest is not. The theme is further emphasized by the fact that the family and guest left the home when they heard the slide, assuming it would be safer elsewhere. The house was untouched by the slide, strong enough to endure, whereas the family and guest outside the home perished. The Indian Hawthorn, also called the India Hawthorn, is more a shrub than an Indian Hawthorn tree. Taller growing varieties are easily pruned to look like a small tree and sma…ll types are very popular with those that create bonsai trees. The leaves of the Indian Hawthorn are leathery and evergreen being darker green on the top. Leaves are rounded and about 2 to 3 inches in length. The plant puts forth pink to white flower clusters in spring that look like crab apple flowers. These flowers smell as beautiful as they look. After the flowers die back, they leave a purple to blue berry that birds love to eat. The Indian Hawthorn is native to China and part of the rose family. The Indian Hawthorn is not picky about the type of soil in which it is planted, but it does like it to be just a little bit acidic. That makes them good to plant around other spring blooming plants like rhododendrons and azaleas. Do not plant Indian Hawthorns in areas where water lays for long periods of time. The plant will grow in partial shade, but blooms better in full sun. Most Indian Hawthorn varieties are not cold tolerant, but a few types will survive winters that do not go below 5 degrees Fahrenheit. When planting an Indian Hawthorn in the ground, dig a hole that is about two times as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Some gardeners make the mistake of planting it deeper than it was in the container they brought it home in. Planting it any deeper can cause damage to the plant. Smaller varieties of the Indian Hawthorn do very well in large pots, as long as there is adequate drainage. The root ball should fit in the pot with about 2 feet around the root ball to the edge of the planter and it should sit as deep as it did in the original pot. Indian Hawthorn make lovely bonsai using a shallow pot, but the branches and roots must be clipped back to keep it looking like a small tree.Because the Indian Hawthorn is a spring blooming plant, it is essential that established plants are fertilized in early spring. This will ensure an abundance of flowers. Use a water-soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer as soon as new growth is detected in the spring. The plant can also be fertilized in late summer as long as it is growing in warm climates. Do not fertilize late summer or fall for those planted in cold climates where the plant will go dormant during the winter.Prune established Indian Hawthorn plants when the flowers stop blooming. The blooms form on the current spring's growth, so if it is pruned in summer or fall, there will be very few flowers the next year. The normal form for an Indian Hawthorn is not tree form, although pruning it to look like a tree is possible. Normally the plant grows as wide as it is tall so a 3-foot tall plant will normally grow 3 feet wide. This makes them perfect for a hedge. Prune damaged stems and branches after they plant flowers, then go inside and prune out some of the branches so that there is adequate air circulation around the plant. If you are pruning to make a tree, you will have to prune many of the bottom stems in order to make a trunk-like configuration.Indian Hawthorn is very susceptible to Entomosporium Leaf Spot. This problem persists in damp weather during spring and fall. Tiny red spots appear on the young leaves and expand to create big blotches. The leaves may drop from an affected Indian Hawthorn. To prevent the disease, avoid watering the plant from sprinkler systems. Instead, use soaker hoses around the roots of the plants or water at the base with a hose or watering can. Place the plant where the morning sun hits it, as it will dry dew deposited on the leaves. Keep the plants pruned so that air circulation can get in through the plant and evaporate any water on the leaves. Dense plants retain rain water and dew and can contract the disease. The Indian Hawthorn tree or plant is a good one to have in a southern garden. It is evergreen and taller varieties are pruned into forms of trees. The taller varieties like Eskimo that grows 6 feet tall with white flowers, Georgia Charm that grows 4 feet with white blooms, and Jack Evans that grows 4 to 5 feet tall with pink flowers are more suitable to grow as trees. The tallest of all the varieties is Majestic Beauty. It grows up to 10 feet tall with pink flowers. Indian Hawthorn does not need much fuss except to prune once a year. This plant will even withstand ocean salt water spray in coastal yards.Indian Hawthorn leaves will change color in the fall where temperatures get somewhat cold. The variety Blueberry Muffin has leaves that turn deep purple if the plant is placed in full sun. Ballerina has leaves that turn red during the winter. (MORE)

Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote novels under the Dark Romantic genre. His stories are mostly allegories (stories told on two levels: literal and figurative).
