"King" - he had a policy of very strong central government. Calling him a king was a way of saying that he had too much Why_was_Andrew_Jackson_called_King_Andrew_the_Firstas president. Actually, he believed in states' powers and not the central, or federal, government. He was called a king because of his dictator-like terms as president. He consulted no one on his decisions, used the veto power excessively to prove that none could override him, killed the Bank of the United States, began the downwards spiral of the U.S. into the Great Depression, threatened to use military force on South Carolina, forced the Indians off their land, ignored John Marshall's decree that the Indians were to be left alone, and basically spit on the Constitution by not honoring the foreign nation treaty with the Indians, who Congress recognized as a foreign nation.
