Jazz began at the late 1800's but really became noticeable in the 1920's. The sound was created through soulful renditions of African American classic songs and used the technique of improvisation.

Jazz wasn't founded; it evolved from and incorporated various sources (including Spanish military band music, Ragtime, an early form of what is now called blues, and boogie-woogie) especially in New Orleans between 1895 and 1915.

Important early practitioners include Buddy Bolden (1877-1931), Jelly Roll Morton 188?-1941), Joe "King" Oliver (1885-1938), The Original Dixieland Jazz Band (influential between 1917 and the mid-1920s), Duke Ellington (1899-1974), and Louis Armstrong 1901-71).

Jazz evolved into myriad forms including Big Band (1920s onwards), Swing (1930s onwards), Bebop (1940s onwards), Jump Blues (1940s and 50s), Cool Jazz (1940s onwards), and avant-garde Jazz (1950s onwards).
