I assume you mean "forerunners," but there are a number of factors, both human and sociocultural that lead to the development of the discipline. Emile Durkheim is considered the father of sociology, as he was one of the earliest and most outspoken advocates for its being distinguished from social psychology and studied scientifically, but other theorists (notably Marx, Weber, and several feminist scholars) were also instrumental in shaping modern sociological thought. In addition, such factors as industrialization, post-Enlightenment scientific approaches to knowledge, and the collection of social data and statistics could all be considered precursors to the emergence of sociology as well.
