Byzantine Influence: The Byzantine empire influenced the early Russians for many reasons. One was that they converted all the Slavs (Early Russians) to Christianity. After that, they took on the Greek alphabet and converted all the Bibles into a Slavic tongue Which easily means that they gave them language. Vladimir made the orthodox Christianity the religion of the Russians. Soon, Russians adapted aspects of the Byzantine culture such as art, music, architecture and an example of this is Byzantine domes started to take on an onion shape which is typical in Russian churches.
Byzantine influence on Russia was really important because Russians adopted aspects of byzantine culture, such as art, music, and architecture. As a result, Byzantine domes evolved into the onion-shaped domes typical of Russian churches.
Incredibly. The Russian script is based on the works of a Byzantine clergyman (Cyril, hence Cyrillic) and the Bulgarians were first introduced to Christianity by the Byzantines; this would later pass into Russia etc.
The Byzantines impacted Russia through their religion, Orthodox Chritianity.
Orthodox Chritanity spread to Bulgria when, Boris I a tsar of the First Bulgarian empire converted to Orthodox Christianity in 864. Saints Cyril and Methodius, two Greek brothers who were sent to Bulgaria as missionaries by the Byzantine Emperor, devised the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet to be used for Slavonic manuscripts and developed Church Slavonic, a liturgical language, in the late 9th century. Thus, they laid the foundation for the spread of Orthodox Christianity though Slav Eastern Europe by missionaries. In 998 Vladimir the Great, grand prince of Kiev, converted to Christianity in order to marry the sister of the Byzantine emperor and form an alliance with the Byzantines. He converted the Rus of Kiev and this propelled the Christianisation of all of Russia.
When the Byzantine Empire fell to the Ottoman Turks, some Russian Orthodox people was Russia as the successor of this empire and nominated Moscow as the "Third Rome" (Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire had been called the "second Rome"). This was prompted by the marriage of Ivan III of Russia Sophia Paleologue, a niece of the last Byzantine emperor. According to the rules of European kingdoms, Ivan could claim to be the heir of the empire. However, the Byzantines did not allow automatic inheritance of the imperial title. Therefore, the "This Rome" claim was based on religion. Russia was to be the upholder of Christianity in the region after the fall of the Byzantine Empire to Muslims.
The adoption of the Byzantine Christianity affected the roman empire by helping them form their own type of religion and changing the way people saw their everyday lives.
