Mostly economic, although any number of philosophical reasons may be cited to justify war. These other reasons may have truth to them, or no truth at all, but the underlying causes of war are generally concerned with trade and Natural Resources, and who should control them.

It would logically seem that there are more reasons not to go to war than to go to war. The loss of life, the destruction of nations, cities, homes and people should be good reasons. The money and energy used to destroy rather than to build should make it something we would never want, and yet there are always "war and rumors of war".
Different nations had different specific reasons, but in general neutrality was based on a decision to avoid subjecting the population to war.

Nations go to war for a variety of reasons. Some of which are mentioned here: A. To gain land; This means bringing in new wealth, such as taking over another nations oil fields; B. To gain political & economic leverage over other nations; C. To prevent other nations from gaining a political and or advantage over themselves; D. To spread a particular type of government philosophy; and E. To spread a particular religion.

Nations presently and have traditionally formed alliances for several reasons. They want to have an assurance that they will have aid during any war or battles and they want to create a bilateral trade system.
