The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves and, along with the brain, it makes up the central nervous system. Nerves carry messages through the spinal cord to the brain, allowing us to feel, taste, smell, see, and hear. Nerves also carry messages from the brain through the spinal cord and to the muscles, allowing us to move.

The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular bundle ofnervous tissue and support cells that extends from thebrain (the medulla oblongata specifically). The brain and spinal cord together make up the central nervous system. The spinal cord begins at theoccipital bone and extends down to the space between the first and second lumbar vertebrae; it does not extend the entire length of the vertebral column. It is around 45 cm (18 in) in men and around 43 cm (17 in) long in women. Also, the spinal cord has a varying width, ranging from 1/2 inch thick in the cervical and lumbar regions to 1/4 inch thick in the thoracic area.

The spinal cord is basically your spine. It carries messages between your brain and the rest of the body. Your spinal cord is a slender nerve column that goes from your brain to your vertebral column. It starts with the foramen magnum and has 31 segments (vertebrae). There are 8 cervical vertebrae, which control nerve impulses in your upper limbs. There are 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar vertebrae, which control the nerve impulses in your upper limbs. There are also 5 sacral and finally 1 coccygeal vertebraes

the spinal cord is responsible for all our immediate action (reflex action) e.g. when you put your hand in hot water, it takes less than a millisecond to realise it. that is due to the presence of spinal cord. there are millions of neurons in all parts of your body. these neurons converge and join spinal cord which then leads to the brain. some times actions need to be taken quickly hence the spinal cord resolves it.

The spinal cord is part of our central nervous system. It has two main roles, both which involve communication, one of which is to the brain, and the other which communicates information from the brain.

1. It takes information from our various senses (smell, touch, feeling, hearing, sight), and transmits it to the brain.

2. It takes orders from our brain and communicates it to our motor system, enabling both our conscious and unconcious/automatic functions. Concious functions include all types of movement. Unconcious functions are things like breathing and heartbeat.

The spinal cord is necessary to our existence.
