By releasing entire seasons of shows all at once, Netflix has become the Pied Piper of Binge-Watching. The second season of "House of Cards," a Netflix remake of the British t…elevision series of the same name, was launched on February 14th, 2014. In just one weekend, 2 percent of Netflix's 33.4 million subscribers in the U.S. had devoured the entire season. That's 13 episodes in just three days.Even viewers who watched "Breaking Bad" on its original run on AMC have admitted to rewatching several episodes in a row, either on Netflix or their DVR. Others decided to play catch-up when the show became a huge hit, watching the first four seasons in time for the fifth and final season. Studies conducted by TiVo list it as the most popular show for binge-watching. Walter White would approve.AMC struck gold again with the zombie drama "The Walking Dead." The folks at AMC also happen to be very aware that watching multiple episodes in a row has become a popular activity for their viewers. Before new seasons air, AMC encourages this behavior by airing "The Walking Dead" marathons. At least their fans will be better prepared in the event of a zombie apocalypse.Trekkies who weren't alive when "Star Trek" originally aired in the 1960s can now hold marathon sessions of the sci-fi show. Binge-watchers can choose from the original "Star Trek" series or newer versions including "The Next Generation," "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager," or "Enterprise." If the original and all 4 spin-offs aren't enough, there are always the movies and the animated series too.If "Orange is the New Black" then binge-watching is the new norm. If TiVo had waited just a bit longer to conduct their study, OITNB might have appeared on the list. Unlike shows that first air on a TV network, Netflix original shows are released in large chunks, an entire season at once. The worst part is finishing the season in one week and waiting almost a year for the next one.One of the most common reasons for binge-watching is to catch up on shows that have been around for a while. Not all fans of AMC's "Mad Men" have been around since the beginning. Some viewers didn't get involved with Sterling Cooper until it had already become Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. "Mad Men" eventually became one of the most popular shows for marathon viewing.BBC's popular "Doctor Who" series has been around for several decades, but its current incarnation has only been around since 2005. Fortunately for die-hard fans, seasons of classic "Doctor Who" are also available. That brings the total number of episodes to over 800 as of December 2013. That's enough to keep fans from leaving the house for weeks, maybe even months. Thanks to a deal between HBO and Amazon Prime, catching up or rewatching old episodes of "Game of Thrones" will be even easier. Debuting on HBO in 2011 makes "Game of Thrones" one of the newest shows to make the list of most popular shows for binge-watching. It's hard to believe that the show will be around for several seasons considering how many of the characters are killed off.Cable networks are usually the ones with the hit shows. PBS, however, managed to enter the arena with its original series, "Downton Abbey." The popular British costume drama was already a success in Ireland and the United Kingdom. A year later, PBS ran it as part of the "Masterpiece Classics" collection. With only seven or eight episodes per season, watching all at once is more like a 5k than a marathon.CBS premiered "NCIS" in 2003 and over a decade later it is still going strong. Not only is "NCIS" one of the most binge-watched TV series, according to that TiVo study, it was also the most watched show in the U.S. for the 2012-13 TV season. This "JAG" spin-off even has two spin-offs of its own, one based in Los Angeles and one in New Orleans. (MORE)
