The fact that you'd leave it in the present tense makes a link between your mother and the living who are reading the inscription. She'd be saying to them, "This is what happens in life. Make what you can of it while you can and don't take yourself too seriously." "C'était la vie", i.e. "That was life", would be weird and slightly disturbing.
