Knights were nobles and they were nobles because a king gave them land and power. So, they had to be loyal to this person or they would loose power, land, and titles. In some cases also their life.

In theory, knights were supposed to be loyal to whoever knighted them, usually a king, but sometimes some other member of high nobility, depending on local custom. The loyalty also passed to the heir of that person. The problem with this is that as the Middle Ages continued, it became more and more common for knights not to be given their own estates to support them, and knights had to depend more and more on pay. Also, wars produced numbers of knights who had been deprived of their estates. So as time went on, mercenary knights became more and more common. These people were supposed to be loyal to whoever hired them, and oaths were often required for this, but the oaths were based on periods of time or the duration of a conflict.
The Baron and the baron to the king
Most knights were allowed to marry, but there were some who were not, There were monastic orders of knights, such as the Knights Templar, and these orders often required their members to make monastic vows. Some of these did not allow marriage.

Originally, there was no code of ethics specifically for knights. During the High Middle Ages, however, the Code of Chivalry was formulated to govern the conduct of knights. It required knights to be honorable, loyal, merciful, and honest. It also required knights to protect people who were poor or unable to protect themselves, especially women and children.
There were ceremonies in which Knights kissed the cross, and this often happened when they became knights.

Well, technically they were. Their Lords paid them with land as long as they were loyal and they continued to protect their lord's land and the people on the land. But money wise, no.

Well knights have to be loyal. They have to be trustworthy. They have to be brave. They have to be helpful . They have to be clean and reverent. It's pretty much the same as the boy scouts. One more thing. A knight has to be able to ride a horse, all tho I can't picture Alfred Hitchcock doing that.
They require them to be loyal to each other and other people. It also requires them to work hard and to know the code of honor.Hope this helped:-) From:<<>>Lov is blood<<>>
