This question is so much better then gross box office, because of inflation new movies will always make more. I used NATO ( national assosiation of theater owners) average price of tickets per year and Imdbs reporting of gross box office for these movies. My numbers admitedly have lots of errors such as the fact that the average price of a movie ticket in any one of these years may not be representetive of the average ticket price paid to see one of these movies since diffrent movies draw crowds at diffrent times of day. How ever my numbers represnt a much more accurate assesment of wich movies sold the most tickets.
movie estimated # of tickets
1. Star Wars 138m
2. TITANIC 131m
3. JAWS 128m
4. ET 122m
5. 101 DALMATIONS 115m
6. Dr. ZHIVAGO 107m #6
7. THE STING 88m #9
8. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK 87m #10
9. JURASIC PARK 86m
10. THE GRADUATE 86m
Well I can tell you one...
SAW
Its a 15 or 18 in England can't remember but Saw V has just come out. If you look on a few Horror movie sites just type you're question in on your search engine (Google, Yahoo, Hotmail or whatever) and it will give you some examples, even some documentaries are gross even though they're not films!
Hope this helps! Oh and if you're not into blood, I would not recommend Saw, but if you like gross films then it should be Ok!
