New Zealand has the benefit of being able to absorb many cultures from around the world. In this sense it is a very diverse dining experience as it offers global cuisine. If you are after the true New Zealand taste sensation, I suggest you try a hangi. This is a traditional indigenous Maori cooking method. It involves digging a pit, lighting a fire in it to heat stones, removing the charred wood, and using the steam from water poured over the white-hot rocks to cook food over several hours, insulated by a pile of earth. The hangi, in its various forms is commonplace throughout the pacific islands, such as the umu in Fiji. The hangi provides a lot of clean, low fat food and is the perfect New Zealand taste experience. Places such as Maori villages in areas like Rotorua may offer a guided tour and meal experience.

Some would say the Pavlova, and others would say the Kiwifruit. This berry originates in China (but variants are found widely in Asia), but it was New Zealand that popularized the Hayward variety in commerce. Fonterra might like to claim that milk was a product with an NZ association, and no doubt NZ Beef and Lamb would put their claim forward as well.

Kiwi Fruit as many people may believe is not New Zealands favourite food. I believe that lamb based food would be the favourite food
Unique taste of New Zealand: Kiwi fruit, Kiwi sweet tooth (chocolate fish), Liquid Gold (soft drink), Indigenous delights (kumara - sweet potato, Huhu grub), Kiwi pavlova (desert), Hokey pokey (caramelised sugar with ice cream).

New Zealand cuisine is a combination of British influences and native Maori dishes. It is known for lamb and mutton chops, as well as seafood. Greenshell mussels, true New Zealand natives, are also very popular in the United States. Other meats popular in New Zealand include beef, venison, cervena and muttonbird, a bird that tastes like fish. A number of native fruits and vegetables are available, including - of course - the kiwifruit. A Maori specialty is the hangi, a feast of meat and vegetables steamed in an earth oven. Other popular foods include the following:

Pavlova

A popular dessert in New Zealand, inspired by ballerina Anna Pavlova's visit to the country. It consists of a sweet meringue that is baked and topped with an assortment of fresh fruit and berries.

Kumara - Also known as sweet potatoes, kumaras may be boiled, roasted, fried, or scalloped. They are particulary tasty when baked in their jackets and served with lamb or pork.

Rangitoto Ice Cream - A dessert consisting of vanilla ice cream, Berry "Lava", Chocolate Sail and Midori Anglaise.

Beverages - New Zealand is quickly becoming world-renowned for its delicious wines, most notably its Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Reisling. Also popular are regional, micro-brewed and imported beers, and Michael Larson reports the comeback of the Cosmopolitan, a mix of vodka, Cointreau or Triple Sec, lime juice and cranberry juice.

Sausage rolls, steak and cheese pies, and fish and chips are a must! The Hot Dogs there are VERY different than what can be found in the States, so give them a try as well! =D

If you can find a place that sells Pavlova with cream and berries, GET SOME! IT'S AMAZING! Lammingtons, or pretty much ANY sweet, are also super great!

For breakfast, Weetbix, a wheaten biscuit bar is popular, though rolled oats also have their following. Topped off with milk of course. Accompanied by toast, and perhaps bacon or eggs or sausages.

Kiwifruit, apples, and bananas would top the fruit list, though many other fruits are great in season.

Meats include those from sheep and beef, with venison, chicken, and fish adding their share.

Ice cream is widely and enthusiastically consumed, marketed in various flavours.

That's a few of the favourite foods.
