Pregabalin (Lyrica) has been increasingly used in the past few years for a variety of pain disorders, including diabetic foot pain, chronic fibromyalgia, Back pain and trigeminal neuralgia. It has been effective enough for its manufacturer to apply to the FDA for expanded indications for these conditions. Side effects include drowsiness when starting therapy, though most report this diminishes within days to weeks. Usual dose is 50-100mg 2-3 times daily.

Initial treatment for TN is usually in the form of anti epileptic medications with carbamazepine (Tegretol®) being the first drug of choice. Other drugs such as baclofen (Lioresal®) , clonazepam (Klonopin®) and gabapentin (Neurontin®) are often used alone or in combination. Trileptal, a drug which was recently approved for use here, appears to have fewer side-effects than Tegretol and is as effective in controlling TN pain. When medication fails, surgery may be considered. Trigeminal Neuralgia is a condition characterized by stabbing facial pain involving the trigeminal nerve as the name implies. The most helpful medication is Oxcrbazepine or carbamazepine. The second best choice is phenytoin. It is of note that the most helpful medications are anticonvulsant and not merely pain killers.
