A UK passport holder does not need a Schengen visa.

A UK passport holder is also an EU citizen and can travel freely to all EU and Schengen countries without a visa.

He/she can also live and work freely in any other EU country.

The only time you might need a visa is if you wanted to live and work in a non-EU country, for example Switzerland or Norway. In this case the document is usually called a work permit, not a visa.

Are US citizens required to have a Schengen Visa?

As I understand it the Schengen agreement between EU countries allows free passage between the collaborating countries without the need to show passports. The UK does not participate as we don't trust the border controls of other countries. A US citizen travelling to a Schengen country needs to have the correct permit / Visa / whatever to visit that country and then will be free to visit all other Schengen countries.

How easy is it to get to country to country in Euro Union?

Most members of the EU are also members of the Schengen agreement. If you are travelling between two of these countries there are no border controls, just a sign by the side of the road. Just drive across the border without stopping. If one or more countries are not in Schengen, then there will be identity checks (passports), but no customs. For example Britain to France. How easy depends on whether you are an EU (or other Schengen country) citizen. EU citizens have a legal right to travel from one EU country to another. As soon as you prove you are an EU citizen by showing your passport, they have got to let you in. Non-EU citizens on non-Schengen borders will have their passports stamped, and they may, depending on their citizenship, be asked questions or have to have a visa.

But why according to schengen rules you can entry any schengen country irrespective of where the visa was issued?

Because the whole point of Schengen is that it has abolished border controls between these countries. Schengen and EU citizens have the right to travel to other Schengen and EU countries without any restriction. Most of these countries are also members of the EU, which has abolished customs between its members. As a result there are no border controls, just a sign by the side of the road when you cross from one country to another. Therefore once you have a Schengen visa and have entered the Schengen Area, these is nothing to stop you travelling to any other Schengen country. You can go from the Helsinki (Finland) to Lisbon (Portugal) and you wil not encounter a single border post.

Is there a border check when driving between Austria and Italy?

Does a schengen visa of Switzerland work to travel to Italy?

Yes. A Schengen visa allows you to travel to all 29 Schengen countries, of which both Switzerland and Italy are members. There are no passport checks when travelling between Schengen countries, so there is no way officialdom knows you have crossed the border. You normally get your Schengen visa from the embassy of the first Schengen country you intend to visit. The time limit on the visa applies collectively to all Schengen countries.

What is the name of the treaty that ended border controls between participating countries signed in 1985?

What is the schengen area and which countries participate?

The "Schengen Area" is the name for the countries which have joined the Schengen agreement. These countries have abolished border controls (Passport controls) between them. Most are also EU members, which have abolished customs controls between them. This means there is no border control at all, just a sign by the side of the road when you cross from one country to another. These countries are sometimes referred to as "Schengen" for short, as in the "Schengen visa".The full list of the 26 current (as of 2012) members of the Schengen area is:Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.Bulgaria and Romania are due to join Schengen in 2013.

What is the purpose of the Schengen Agreement?

The Schengen Agreement has eliminated all border controls within the Schengen Area. The EU is a customs union and has abolished customs between members. If you are travelling between two countries which are in both the EU and Schengen, there are no border checks at all, just a sign by the side of the road. If you are travelling between two EU countries and only one is in Schengen (e.g. UK to France) there are passport checks but no customs. If you are travelling between two Schengen countries where one is not in the EU (e.g. Sweden to Norway), there are customs checks but no passport checks.

Can you travel from Slovenia to the UK without a passport?

Yes, if you have Slovenian ID card. Slovenia is a party to the Schengen Treaty so people can move freely among countries without border control (to neighbouring Italy, Austria and Hungary) and practically all of the continental EU countries. United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen Treaty so border control is in place, so you have to identify yourself to be a EU citizen - with a passport or an ID card.

Is schengen tourist visa valid for 2 days travel to Montenegro?

Montenegro is not a part of the Schengen Area, therefore a Schengen visa is not valid in Montenegro. Note Montenegro does not border on any Schengen countries, so unless you are flying there from a Schengen country, you may need a visa for whatever country you travel through.

Can you go to Panama with a Schengen visa?

I very much doubt it. A Schengen visa is valid for 26 countries, all of which are in Europe. As the purpose is to abolish border controls, an Panama has no border with any European country, there would be no reason for Panama to join.
