Schist began as sediment, but metamorphic actions serve to differentiate various minerals from the sedimentary source. There are numbers of micas, but muscovite (a transparent variety) is very common and adds a pleasant specular reflection to schists surface. The micas are among the last minerals to form as the temperature drops from the metamorphism, and are often used as an indicator of the age of the schist itself.

Schists are pleasantly laminated rocks and are widely used in masonry. In general they are too soft for satisfactory road metal, but are so used, and also perform as paving slabs for for traffic. In a direction normal to the laminations, they are quite strong; and easy to use; and are used as bridge towers for example.
