Mastitis will keep getting worse if it goes untreated, if you begin to treat in the early stage the cow will have mastitis for about a week. It will take longer to treat mastitis as it progresses.

Once a cow gets mastitis, it can become chronic and she will be more likely to get it in the future. Usually farmers treat mastitis with antibiotics given directly to the area of infection. Don't worry, though, all the antibiotics are completely out of the cow and her milk before the milk is able to be consumed by humans.
