An average IQ score is 100. A score under 70 is considered mental retardation. Borderline mental retardation is generally around 70-85 - high enough not to be considered menta…lly retarded, but just barely. In general, the characteristics are similar to mild mental retardation (50-70 IQ) but milder. The person may have difficulty learning in school. In adulthood, most can hold down a job that isn't highly intellectual, and they'll probably be able to live independently. Borderline mental retardation is more significant when combined with other disabilities such as ADHD or learning disabilities. Since their overall skills are somewhat lower, any additional condition will send specific areas into the impaired range. So for example if a person with an IQ of 78 had a 20 point discrepancy in verbal versus performance IQ (which is often seen in specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia or nonverbal learning disability), the lower score will be in the mild mental retardation range. In addition, they have a harder time learning compensatory strategies, such as memorizing words if you struggle with decoding, that other people with similar disabilities can use.
No, not by a long shot. Mental retardation may be caused by genetics, problems during pregnancy, birth problems, problems that may occur after birth, socio-economic deprivatio…n and other accidental causes. If an individual has an IQ that is generally 70 or below with co-occuring deficits in major life areas such as communication, mobility, learning, self direction, etc., mental retardation may be diagnosed. Mental illness can be created by stress, heredity, genetic predisposition, or any of many other factors. It is not predictable or screenable. It can also vary from mild to severe with huge variances in presentation. It can also appear later in life to people with perfectly normal IQ's and reasoning skills.
Mental retardation is a developmental disability that first appears in children under the age of 18. It is defined as an intellectual functioning level (as measured by s…tandard tests for intelligence quotient) that is well below average and significant limitations in daily living skills (adaptive functioning). It all depends. If they got in trouble with the law, frequently they were sent to mental hospitals rather than Prisons, and this was considered more humane than tossing th…em in with hardened criminals. Very often retarded people were sterilized to prevent them from committing sexual crimes. This was very controversial but it was done, and in fact was endorsed by such a famous judge as Oliver Wendell Holmes.
yes, phenylketonuria progressively leads to mental retardation. In phenylketonuria, there is lack of enzyme phenylalanine oxidase which generally oxidises phenylalanine to… tyrosine. Hence, accumulation of phenylalanine occurs. This leads to a mousy smell a well as mental retardation.
According to the original definitions, from Lewis Terman (1916): Over 140 - Genius or near genius120 - 140 - Very superior intelligence110 - 119 - Superior intelligence90 - 1…09 - Normal or average intelligence80 - 89 - Dullness70 - 79 - Borderline deficiencyUnder 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness (bullet points quoted from http://wilderdom.com/intelligence/IQWhatScoresMean.html, accessed on Feb 9, 2010) Wikipedia provides a more recent breakdown of the "Under 70" category, as follows, under their article on Mental retardation (accessed on Feb 9, 2010): 70-79 - Borderline Intellectual Functioning 50-69 - Mild mental retardation 35-49 - Moderate mental retardation 20-34 - Severe mental retardation Under 20 - Profound mental retardation Note that there are many reasons for low IQ ratings and it is often more useful to have a professional determine what those reasons are and try to help counteract them. Low IQ simply means there is a mental deficiency; the standard tests don't do anything for pointing out what that deficiency is or how it can be addressed.
i r retarted an i am farted butt i can smell butt i r spell this i Cain coont to hair
Yes, unfortuneately some people are. This can happen for many different reasons; some it is with the development of the child in the womb; some times the brain does not fully …develop so there is a problen. In other cases some people have a known medical condition which (again) affects the brain and the ability to thnk 'normally'.
Mildly retarded people can live alone if necessary and often get married. Profoundly retarded people need caring in their whole life.
When a person is mentally challenged, it takes a lot of patience and kindness to help them, you do "not deal with them" as you put it, the first thing is to have compassio…n and try and think what it would be like if you were in their shoes.
First, kick the 'r' word out of your vocabulary! "Challenged" is more appropriate, and try to remember that we all are "challenged" in one way or another. For example: I am vi…sually challenged. I do not see as well as my next door neighbor. Another example: No matter how hard I try, I will never be able to swing a golf iron as efficiently as Tiger, or cook as well as Paula Deene, and I do not have the mental wherewithall that would allow me to be a neuropathologist. So get rid of adjectives, and view everyone as individuals with unique abilities, including those who just happen to function a little slower than yourself. I speak from experience. I am the mother of a 43 yrs. old daughter who has Down syndrome. She can read and comprehend as well as most people, now. It just took her a little longer to get there. Love and Patience are always the key.
They have equal rights under the law.
no. dyslexia is not the same as mental retardation.
Many (most?) are, in some way, dysfunctional in our society and unable to engage in 'everyday' activities. But there are also many who are absolutely brilliant at certain task…s and endeavors. To paint them all with the broad brush as being "retarded" is incorrect and an injustice.
Apparently, he generally referred to the mentally retarded and mentally ill as 'those who eat their own feces', despite the fact that it was tactfully pointed out to him that …very, very few mentally ill people do this.
Personally, I prefer the terms "Intellectually disabled", or just "mentally disabled". Calling these people "retarded" (whether you realize it or not) is actually kind of dero…gatory.
