Hurricane Katrina struck landfall as a category 3 with winds around 120 mph caused most of its damage through flooding. Hurricane Andrew struck Florida and the gulf as a category 5 with winds acceding 165 mph. Even though Andrew was much stronger when it hit. The damage Katrina caused exceeded Andrew's cause of all the flooding done because of New Orleans being under sea level and the levee's failing which instead of blocking the water it trapped the water in. The official death toll is 1,836.

The two hurricanes are alike because they were both deadly to humans and wild life. They both caused serious damage and repairs cost a whole bunch of money. Hurricane Andrew's damage in money was way less than Hurricane Katrina's. Katrina's damage in money was 3 times as much as Andrew's, and Andrew is the second costliest hurricane! So obviously, Katrina is the costliest hurricane on record. Both hit the Gulf of Mexico! They are both named after peoples first name, as all hurricanes are. Andrew was the first hurricane of the 1992 Atlantic season, getting it an "A" name. Katrina was the eleventh of the 2005 Atlantic season. Therefore both hurricanes were formed in or very close to the Atlantic Ocean. Andrew was formed in the Atlantic, while Katrina was formed in the Caribbean area. Hurricane Andrew hit Florida as a category 5 hurricane (strongest), and hitting New Orleans as a category 3. Hurricane Katrina was a category 3 the whole way. Katrina only hit New Orleans.

No. Hurricane Andrew was one of the most intense hurricanes to directly hit the U.S., but in terms of actual size, Andrew was relatively small compared to other hurricanes, with a gale-force wind diameter of only about 180 miles. The largest Atlantic hurricane on record was Hurricane Sandy, with a gale diameter of 1,100 miles.

Hurricane Katrina was far worse. It was significantly more destructive and many times deadlier than Hurricane Andrew.

Comparing the statistics, Hurricane Andrew killed 65 people and cost $26.5 billion ($36.9 billion in 2005 dollars). By comparison Katrina killed 1,836 people and cost $108 billion. In addition to the simple numbers, horrific conditions on New Orleans persisted for days if not weeks afterwards.

The Great Hurricane of 1780, also known as the Hurricane San Calixto II, is the deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record. Over 27,500 people died when the storm passed through the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean between October 10 and October 16. The 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston TXcaused great loss of life in the US with the estimated death toll between 6,000 and 12,000 individuals;[2] the number most cited in official reports is 8,000, giving the storm the third-highest number of casualties of any Atlantic hurricane, after the Great Hurricane of 1780 and 1998's Hurricane Mitch.

Was hurricane Katrina the worst hurricane in the universe?

In terms of property damage, Katrina was the worst hurricane in U.S. history. However it was nowhere near being the deadliest tropical cyclone (the generic term for hurricanes. Hurricane Katrina killed 1,836 people. The deadliest hurricane in the U.S. the Galveston hurricane of 1900 killed at least 6,000 people and possibly as many as 12,000. The deadliest of all tropical cyclones, the Bhola cyclone of 1970 killed at least 300,000 people.

What was the most recent category 5 hurricane before Katrina?

The highest winds recorded in a hurricane were 190 mph. More specifically, Typhoons Tip, Keith, Vera, Sarah, and Hurricanes Allen and Camille are the only tropical cyclones to record a 190 mph sustained wind. However, a recon estimate within Typhoon Nancy (1961) reported sustained winds of 215 mph. However, wind speed estimates at the time were deemed as overestimates, and thus 215 mph from Nancy is not verifiable record.

How strong do hurricanes hit land?

Depends on the hurricane, normally what category it is. For instance, category 5 hurricanes have the fastest wind speeds that hurricanes can get up to. It doesn't depend on size because if you look at Hurricane Andrew, it was tiny compared to some other hurricanes, but being a category 5, it caused a lot of damage, and is now the second costliest hurricane.I said that it normally depends on the category, right? Well, not always. Look at Hurricane Katrina, or Hurricane Mitch. Hurricane Katrina was a category 3 hurricane when it made landfall and is the costliest hurricane of all time. Katrina is more than 3 times as much as Hurricane Andrew! And Hurricane Mitch was only a category 1 when it made landfall! But Mitch caused a great deal of damage from a lot of rain causing mudslides that could bury one's head! So in this case, I think it is where the hurricane strikes, because if Mitch hadn't struck Mexico (I think), then it might have not been so affective. Same thing for Katrina. If she had hit, oh I don't know, Texas, maybe, then it might have not flooded New Orleans!Hope this helped!
