Yes, Jack the Ripper is a name given to an unidentified serial killer (or killers) active around Whitechapel, London, England in the late 19th century. However, the killer was never found and therefore the name 'Jack the Ripper' is fictional.

We don't know. We may never know. Leading scholars on the subject believe it was probably some local nobody whose name has been lost to history. But there are some things to consider:

  • Patricia Cornwell wrote a book on her investigations titled, Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case Closed. In this book, she pointed towards a British artists named Walter Sickert. There are also many other theories and suspects.
  • Several other murders were reported around the time of these but were not believed to be the work of Jack the Ripper. Nobody knows who Jack the Ripper really was. Accusations were even vented at the Royal Family. Some think he might have been a doctor or a butcher because of how he cut and killed the women because of the anatomical knowledge Jack The Ripper had. Newspapers and police in London around this time started receiving taunting letters from someone who signed them Jack the Ripper, but whether it really was Jack The Ripper or someone vying for attention was never known. All the murders happened in the year of 1888 and all the murders happened on weekends so it could have been a foreigner who only came for weekend visits.
  • Jack The Ripper was a famous murderer who in the end, ended up killing himself (which was expected to believe)No1 knows what really happend.
  • For at least another 2 years the police searched for Jack The Ripper in 1890 they announced Dead

We know now that there were far more murders than the 'original 5' JTR did not kill himself, was not the prince, was not leather apron, was not Aaron Kosminski, was not Michael Ostrog, was not M. Druit, was not a woman, was not the Queen's Dr. Gull, was not a Mason, was not James Maybrick (who in fact wrote the 'fake' Jack the Ripper's diary, was not a Dr. at all, was not a Jew. What he was - A white male aged 25-35 apprx., if married, had freedom to come and go as he pleased. Had an IQ above average maybe even genius level, had extreme hatred toward women, was undoubtedly suffering from 'anti-social personality disorder' or APD, may have had a parent (most likely a father) that suffered from the same APD, had a contempt for authority, had feelings of superiority toward the entire world with few exceptions. The murders did not just happen on weekends, this man if he was employed had the kind of job that gave him a certain amount of freedom. This profile is based on the crimes and evidence available.

He was a real person. Nobody knows for certain who he was, though (although there are many theories). He brutally murdered 5 women in the Whitechapel District of London in 1888. It is believed that all 5 murders were committed by the same man -- a man who called himself Jack the Ripper in letters he sent to the police -- but no one knows what his real name/identity was. See the Related Links below for more information.

The "Jack the Ripper" murders did indeed take place between August and November 1888. The Ripper did exist, though over the years a great deal of myth and legend has grown up around the basic facts of the case. These myths have been perpetuated in books and movies for over a century now, to the point where they have all but enveloped the brutal reality of the original crimes. But the answer is yes, the Ripper did exist.

We don't know who he really was but he was real. He was a someone, usually thought of as a man, who we couldn't identify. He killed 5 people! It happened 100 years ago!

Jack the Ripper was a name given to an unidentified serial killer that linked 5 victims to him. It is possible and quite likely that he was really Walter Sickert, the painter, who was fascinated with murder and the Ripper murders, as shown in his (sometimes quite disturbing) paintings.

It is unknown whether or not Jack the Ripper is alive.

//I think it is fairly safe to assume that Jack The Ripper is dead. Considering that his crimes are 120+ years in the past.
