Cultural, economic and political interactions have been going on between Portugal and Africa for over five centuries now. For five of Portugal's former colonies are found among the many countries of Africa. And one such former colony is the independent nation of Mozambique, whose colonial name was Portuguese East Africa. Portuguese navigators discovered the island of Mozambique in 1498, during the expedition of Vasco da Gama [c. 1460/1469-December 24, 1524] around southernmost Africa and into the Indian ocean. Among those who are credited with the island's discovery is Pero Dias, who was the brother of famous navigator Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500]. By the early 16th century, the Portuguese were operating trading centers, missionary bases, and forts on the island. And nowadays the entire island is recognized as one of the UNESCO heritage sites throughout the world.

Answer #1 Portugal. This is the most south-western country in Europe. Answer #2 Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, and of former Portuguese colonies in Africa, Asia, and South America. Additionally, it shares official language status with Spanish and French in Equatorial Guinea. In Asia, Portuguese is the official language in the former colony of Macau, where it shares that status with Chinese; and in the former colony of East Timor, where it shares that status with Tetum. If by 'new world', you mean 'America', the the name of the colony is Brasil. Today it is a country in South America, which has natural beauty, size and poverty in equal quantities. I will take the liberty to say also that the word 'colony' comes from 'colonus', a latin expression meaning 'slave'.

Where would you expect Portuguese to be the official language?

I would expect Portuguese to be the official language in the southwest European country of Portugal; and in former Portuguese colonies in Africa, Asia, and South America. Portugal is one of my choices, because the country is the native homeland of the Portuguese language. For Portuguese is one of the Romance languages along with French, Italian, Romanian, and Spanish. And so its origins trace back to the long-ago interactions between the Latin language of Rome, and the ancient languages of the areas that the ancient Romans conquered. In the specific case of Portuguese, that interaction took place in the Iberian Peninsula. Former Portuguese colonies is another of my choices, because the mother country controlled the cultural, linguistic and politico-economic interactions of the colony as much as possible. Often, the mother country was able to profit from pre-existing rivalries within the colony to achieve cultural, linguistic and politico-economic dominance. And it was easier to keep communication in one language, for the recordkeeping of the mother country, and in the colony. And such is indeed the case with former Portuguese colonies. For Portuguese is the official language in the former African colonies of Angola, Cape Verde Islands, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Sao Tome and Principe. Such also is true of the former South American colony of Brazil. And such also is true of former Asian colonies. But, in Asia, Portuguese shares official language status with Chinese, in Macau; and with Tetum, in East Timor.

What are four countries that speak Portuguese?

Four countries that speak Portuguese are Portugal, whose navigators and explorers made the language known to the rest of the world; the former Asian colony of Macau, where the official languages are Chinese and Portuguese; and the former African colony of Guinea-Bissau, and the former South American colony of Brazil, both of which keep Portuguese as their official languages.
