Spain was not an original member of NATO (it was a Fascist Dictatorship under Franco at the time), however it joined in 1982 (after Franco's death in 1975 and the gradual restoration of a democratic government).

During the Post-War Franco Period (1945-1975), Franco became a strong ally of Western Europe and the United States, but was not allowed to join NATO since it was a dictatorship. When Spain became democratic in 1981 (1975-1981 was a transition period), Spain was offered membership in NATO, which it accepted in 1982.

Franco was a fierce adversary of the Communists and would never have joined Communists in the Warsaw Pact.
