The issue was more complex. Lincoln's primary goal was to preserve the Union. Although he was opposed to slavery he felt preserving the union was by far the most important thing. He said that if he could preserve the Union by freeing all of the slaves he would, if he could do it by freeing no slaves, he would do that and if he could save the union by freeing some slaves and not others, then he would do that. Among people in the North, opinions varied. Some wanted to preserve the Union and did not care about slavery. Others wanted to end slavery and didn't really care about preserving the Union except as a means to that end. And some were just interested in political power, economic gain or plain old adventure. Such is the case in almost any war. Also some fought because they were drafted.
Michael Montagne Answer The issue was more complex. Historians used to say that the issue of the civil war was slavery, and that is incorrect. The main reason the south seceded from the union was over the issue of states rights. The north and the abolitionist movement was determined to prevent any additional territories from becoming slave states. This led to the southern states looking in the future to a government dominated by powers who hated their style of life. The catalyst for the US Civil War could easily be listed as slavery, and some say this is semantics. I disagree. President Lincoln had said if he could preserve the union and keep slavery he would have.
They were "the Civil War". The North and the South were going against each other. They were fighting against slavery (the North). And the South wanted slavery.
the north fought the south, and the north won north- against slavery south- slavery
slavery was the most basic differences between the north and south and they did not like the fact that people wanted slavery and some people didn't. another difference was everyone wanted to have all the forts so the decided to battle and see who should win Fort Sumter and when the battle was over the North won Fort Sumter even though Fort Sumter battle and Fort Sumter is in the south.
The north and south
No they thought slavery was bad that's how the civil war started but in the 1800s there was slavery in the north and south. The Union was anti-slavery.

He was fighting against the south so he was with the north fighting against slavery.
if your talkin about the civil war...which I'm pretty sure you are...they were fighting because they thought slavery was wrong
during civil war south wanted slavery but north was fighting it
Yes they were fighting about slavery. The north side of the U.S. was fighting against slavery and south was fighting to keep slavery. Boo slavery!
The civil war was different because in the civil war it was northern America fighting southern America. in other wars it was all of America fighting a different country. They were fighting because the South (or the Confederates) wanted to keep slavery in the US. The North ( or the union) was fighting to abolish slavery in the US. Of course, the North won.
They were fighting because the north didn't believe in slavery and the south did. So the south got angry because the north was trying to banned slavery from all of the states. That is why we had the Civil War.
there are tons of other websites that will give you that answer but the main reason was because of slavery issues between the north and the south. the north was anti slavery and the south was pro slavery.
To prevent the south from seceding from the north.
the civil war was all about freeing the slaves. the north wanted to abolish slavery and the south wanted to keep slavery. in the end nobody ever knew what they were fighting for.
The event that triggered the fighting between the north and south was when Jefferson Davis ordered that Fort Sumpter be attacked. This started the American Civil War. States rights and slavery were also trigger points.
The American's didn't lose the civil war because the North states were fighting the south states over whether there should be slavery in North America or not.
