My grandmother told me that her first child, a baby girl named Florence, died at 7-8 months old during a diphtheria epidemic in 1913 in Brunswick, Maine. I have never been able to find anything that tells me about this epidemic (it may be that I don't really know how to research it), but I've heard about this particular epidemic from my older relatives many times, since it was such a sad event in their lives.
