The Huguenots, who were mostly from Southern France, had always had problems with the monarchy Paris and the Church in Rome. See 'Huguenots and Jews of the Languedoc' for more information.

By the late 17th century the Huguenots were forced to leave France and made their way to many countries with Protestant communities throughout the world.

No. The Huguenots were a Calvinist Protestant Christian minority in France, primarily concentrated in the central-coastal city of La Rochelle.

Actually if you read 'Huguenots and Jews of the Languedoc', you will understand that not all Huguenots were Calvinists. And, La Rochelle is the port the Huguenots escaped out of. The Huguenots inhabited all of the Languedoc at one time. I addition, many of the Huguenots were of Jewish descent and many of the Huguenots actually practiced Judaism.

They were actively persecuted by the French Catholic Kings prior to and after the rescission of the Edict of Nantes.

The people of the Languedoc including the Huguenots, the Cathars, the Jews, and the Muslims were persecuted by the French kings for a thousand years before the Huguenots were forced out of France.

According to the National Huguenot Society "The Huguenots were French Protestants most of whom eventually came to follow the teachings of John Calvin, and who, due to religious persecution, were forced to flee France to other countries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Some remained, practicing their Faith in secret.".
