Although there are some earthquakes that are exceptions, most are identified by the year they occurred and where they hit (usually a prominent location) such as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake (the San Francisco Fire) and the 1922 Vallenar Earthquake (Chile).

Exception include names such as the Good Friday Earthquake (another name for the 1964 Alaskan Earthquake), and the Boxing Day Earthquake (2004 Indian ocean Earthquake and Tsunami).
