Dead dogs' bodies from the animal shelters usually go to rendering facilities to be converted into pet food, soaps, sometimes crayons, and lubricants, among other things. Questions have been raised concerning the health of pets that may be ingesting drugs that were used for the euthanizing of some of the dogs from animal shelters, however, the FDA concluded that there are such insignificant amounts of it in pet food that it most likely will not affect the pet's health. CVM conducted a test to find out if pet food really did have dead dogs (and cats) in it, but scientists did not find any dog (or cat) DNA in pet food. Whether dogs are rendered and put into pet food is questionable, but for sure, many dead dogs from animal shelters are, in fact, sent to be rendered.
