Most sources indicate that The Beatles first known drug use was the taking of uppers whilst playing long sets with little sleep during the visits to Hamburg in 1960-61. All four of them smoked cigarettes, starting in their teen years. (It was the social thing to do.) John Lennon smoked with pleasure for most of his life, preferring Gauloises and later Gitanes, as well as Dunhills. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr stopped smoking in the 1980s. George Harrison's smoking habit ultimately led to his death from cancer.

The Beatles also drank alcohol; usually beers or cocktails bought them by their early listeners in Hamburg and Liverpool, or what they could pay for on their time off. Ringo Starr and John Lennon were the hardest drinkers. Starr kept his cool while drinking, but Lennon could turn violent if provoked. Both men struggled with alcohol later, but were able to get (and stay) sober. Lennon modified his diet in the 1970s to mostly health foods; Starr began a workout routine in the 1980s.

In late 1964, the group met with Bob Dylan in a New York Hotel. Dylan misunderstood the line "I can't hide" in the song I Want To Hold Your Hand as "I get high", and introduced them to "grass smoking".

The band admitted to being stoned throughout most of the filming of Help! in 1965, and Paul McCartney claims the songs "Got To Get You Into My Life" and "Fixing A Hole" were "odes to pot". The smoking of the herb is said to have played a large role in the albums Beatles For Sale and Rubber Soul. Later, in 1967, all four members of the group signed a petition to legalize cannabis.

George Harrison and John Lennon were introduced to LSD by George Harrison's dentist at a dinner party in late 1965. The whole group took it together at a Los Angeles house party the following summer. It had its influence on their music over the next year (1967), beginning with "She Said She Said", "Tomorrow Never Knows", and portions of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour.

Urban legends existed that the Beatles used drugs frequently while recording. While the band would smoke cannabis during breaks, and pep pills were common (as with many job fields of the time), other drugs were infrequent. Lennon once mistook a dose of LSD for a stimulant; feeling unwell suddenly at the microphone, he needed to take a break, and producer George Martin walked him around the roof of the studio, and ended the session early, so Lennon could go home.

Ringo Starr said years later that "whenever we overdid our intake, the music we made was absolutely s**t...", and they'd have to restart tracks next time. Sometimes Beatles songs were alleged to be about drugs or drug experiences, including "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Fixing A Hole" (heroin) and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (LSD). It didn't help that the title of "Lucy" "Sky" and "Diamonds" included the same letters of the Abbreviation, but most of the assumptions were false. Most of the Beatles' songs actually involving drugs weren't usually noticed as such.

The band publicly announced in the summer of 1967 that they were renouncing all drug use, after they began Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. After parting ways with him, the Beatles gradually resumed using alcohol and drugs.

In 1968, John Lennon and Yoko Ono flirted with heroin, and the flirtation turned into addiction, which they struggled with for over a year. Paul McCartney also developed a cocaine habit around the same time, which he stopped later. (George Harrison also had trouble with cocaine, during the 1980s.)

Lennon and Ono were arrested for hashish possession in 1968, as were George Harrison and his first wife Patti in 1969. Paul McCartney has had the most trouble with the law, he was busted in 1972, 1980 and 1984 for possession of marijuana. Each of them had problems entering the United States later, because of their drug arrests.

It was in the 60s and they sang about peace and love; take a guess. ;)

Yes, in addition to doing speed, cocaine, heroin and LSD.

It's commonly believed that songs such as "Day Tripper", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "A Day In The Life", and "Happiness is a Warm Gun", among many others, were cryptic references to drugs, and that they were high when many of their songs were written, though none of the Beatles ever confirmed this. I personally believe that "I Am The Walrus" was written under the influence of drugs, because there is no way a person that isn't on drugs could write such a strange song.

Although all the Beatles smoked cannabis well in to the 1970s, they all stopped smoking anything - particularly after George contracted throat cancer. Nowadays, with Paul and Ringo both in their 70s, it's likely that they take prescription drugs.
