How did battery park get its name?

I believe it came from the Battle of New York during the Revolutionary War. While the Colonial Army under Nathaniel Greene occupied the Palisades at Fort Lee ( named after Charles Lee ) and Israel Putnam occupied Fort Washington on the New York side of the Hudson River, Henry Knox positioned his cannons at Battery Park facing the Hudson. His effort was to delay the British Navy under Admiral Howe from advancing on the colonial positions. His guns were facing the wrong direction as Howe went up the East River bypassing the guns. Yes because a group of cannons is called a battery but I don't think they fired the wrong way.
