Selective media is one that grows only certain microorganisms while inhibiting (or preventing) others from growing, that is to say , the media has certain chemicals that allow one organism to grow but another organism cannot grow with those ingredients in the media, thus, is selective for the organisms that can grow in that media. Therefore, most commonly grows only one type of organism. Differential media is one that distinguishes one microorganism from another, it can grow more than one microorganism, but depending on how each organism reacts to the media (like turns red) it differentiates from another microorganism. In this type of media if you are trying to distinguish between 2 types of microorganisms, both should grow but they will have different reactions to the media, and thru their visible reactions you can tell them apart (differentiate them).

a media is known selective when we add some growth factor for specific type of organisms which are needed, which give support to grow for them only.. and differential media is one in which we can get the differentiated organisms both growing.

Selective mediums -grows some organisms and inhibits the growth of others

Differential mediums - distinguishes between different types of bacteria based on some characteristics of the bacteria that is growing on it, the appearance of different organisms varies

A Selective media contains antimicrobial agents to inhibit the growth of certain microbes.

An Enrichment Media stimulates the growth of certain bacteria or they may even supress the growth of other for the isolation of the desired bacteria.

I'm not sure, but i think enriched media contain substances that enhance the growth of most bacteria, like blood agar which enhance the growth of most bacteria, while enrichment media contain a substance that's specially formulated to enhance the growth of some bacteria. Not like selective media which inhibit the growth of most bacteria except the selected ones.

enriched media contains complex mixtures of molecules and nutrients needed for growth for example LB media is a commonly used rich media containing salt (NaCl), tryptone and yeast extract. another example would be blood agar

a selective media would normally be used to describe one containing a rich media such as LB, with the addition of a selective agent such as an antibiotic for example LB with ampicillin is a selective media.

Selective media will 'select' for one type of bacteria, perhaps those liking more salt. A differential media will show what each species is, for example Gram + or Gram -

Why is direct selective or differential plating used for saureus testing rather than selective enrichment isolation?

Selective enrichment media are useful in recovering organisms which are in very low numbers, and they are often formulated like their corresponding isolation media.Selective enrichment will enhance their growth over competing bacteria, however undesired bacteria may grow.S.aureus grows poorly in the presence of others food microflora.By adding a selective agent to "poison" undesired organisms making the medium restrictive by including a nutrient only certain organisms can use or by leaving something out therefore direct selective or differential plating is more efficient to isolate s.aureus.Metabolically,it can utilize mannitol, which are not seen with other staphylococcal species.

Composition of selective media?

selective media isl ike enrichment media with the difference that inhibiting substance is added to solid medium, e.g. deoxycholate citrate medium which contains nutrient agar, sodium deoxycholate , sodium citrates lactose and neutral red.

EMB is a selective medium Is it also a defined or an undefined medium Why is that formulation desirable?

EMB is an undefined selective/differential medium. It contains aniline dyes (methylene blue and eosin), which inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria selecting for Gram-negative bacteria. EMB also contains lactose which makes the media differential based on an organisms ability to ferment lactose

Is a blood agar selective or differential?

Blood agar is a bacterial growth medium which contains 5% sheep's blood. It is considered to be differential but not selective, because it is an enriched medium that provides a rich nutrient environment for many types of bacteria, while a selective medium supports the growth of certain types of bacteria but inhibits other types. Blood agar is considered differential because it is used to distinguish pathogenic bacteria based on the effect of bacterial enzymes known as hemolysins which lyse red blood cells. Blood agar is mainly used clinically to detect the presence of Streptococcus pyogenes, the human pathogen which causes "strep throat". Blood agar can be made selective by the addition of other ingredients.

How could the use of a medium which is both selective and differential be justified?

The use of a medium that is both selective and differential can be justified in a few ways. They allowe the growth of organisms that can be of interest. The media can also be quite useful diagnostically in medical settings.

Does a single medium ever function as differentiation and enrichment media?

Media is always more enriching with more than one form, so a single medium would rarely if ever function as differentiation and enrichment.
